Artist: Seraphim Slaughter
Album Title: Scum Terror
Label: AIDS Needle Records
This is the first album from Seraphim Slaughter, an American band playing black/thrash metal.
The production on this album is high and thin, with a buzzing, snarling guitar sound and tons of cymbal abuse. Even the bass sound is a bit high and jangly. The vocals are screamed, and tend to blend a bit with the instruments, though they stand on their own during the quieter parts. At any rate, they're clearly meant to be as over-the-top as everything else, so it works!
Seraphim Slaughter alternates between Norse-style black metal and punky thrash. Their black metal stuff sounds a lot like post-Panzerfaust Darkthrone, but they throw in a few bombastic Emperor-like passages, as well. The thrashing parts are very simple and raging, but quite convincing. When they're both in the same song, the transitions between the two styles could be a lot smoother -- for example, "Stabbed With An Aids Needle" almost sounds like somebody's switching between two different turntables at the transition points -- but each individual part is enjoyable, and they're not totally incompatible, so it's hard to complain too much. I like the thrash bits better than the black metal parts, which sound a bit typical at times, but the overall effect created by combining the two is pretty good. It fits the ridiculously offensive lyrics & album art perfectly!
"Scum Terror" is a great drinking & headbanging album, worth seeking out for fans of newer Darkthrone and violent bands like Luger, Devastator, and Blasphemer. If Seraphim Slaughter returns armed with a heavier production, their next album should be killer! Recommended.
